I finally found, bought and shipped a few amazing huge oak wine tanks from France and can now have some serious fun and create custom wine barrel beds from solid oak.

Over three years is required for the construction of a barrel. And if you calculate the length of time for an oak tree to grow – hundreds of years are involved.

The wood used for these barrels comes from central France. These are the forest lands planted by Louis XIV, who wanted high-quality hardwood to build ships for the French navy. To this day, the best oak comes from this area. The French government owns 40% of all forested land, including the original tracts planted by Louis XIV. Once a year, various areas are put on auction and wine cooperages bid on them. It’s a complicated, bureaucratic process. And very expensive. Half the cost of a barrel is in the purchase of timber.

The wood is the best I have ever seen. Quercus Petraea and Quercus Robur are the two types of oak used. “Quercus Petraea grows more slowly than Robur and it’s more aromatic and less tannic than Robur. The fine grain in these oaks is a result of the quality management of the ONF (French National Forest Office) who oversees high density tree growth.

I dried these wine tanks for a year then put them into my kiln to get the moisture content perfect for woodworking and to also destroy any pesky bugs hanging around.

Sanded silky smooth then sealed with organic, food grade, renewable super hard Tung Oil, it will last several lifetimes bringing the charm of wine country into your home, and is the perfect touch in any bedroom.

Very "light" piece visually but incredibly sturdy to resist dogs and kids, after all, its solid oak.

100% recycled and reclaimed wood!
